Performance Artist
Jennifer Miller has worked as a circus performer for twenty years, in traditional venues as well as more subversive ones. Miller began her career as a “bearded lady” in a sideshow at Coney Island. In 1989, she founded Circus Amok, a political performance troupe that continually reappropriates and reinvents the meaning of circus and its capacity for political engagement. Miller has been the subject of two documentaries: Un Cirque a New York (2002) and Juggling Gender (1992). She is an adjunct professor of Intercultural Performance at the University of California, Los Angeles and also teaches at the California Institute of the Arts.
