In response to the U.S.-led war in Iraq, the controversial politics and policies of President George W. Bush, ongoing strife between Palestinians and Israelis, and a wide range of other domestic and international issues, artists in New York City and elsewhere have been using their work as a platform on which to discuss matters of political and social relevance.
For this juried exhibition, Apsara DiQuinzio and Tina Kukielski, assistant curators at the Whitney Museum of American Art and co-curators of the recent "Freedom Salon" exhibition at Deitch Projects, have assembled pieces by 25 visual artists who, through paintings, installations, sculptures, and photographs, have demonstrated their critical engagement with the ethical and aesthetic considerations of politically-based art.
